There are 26 letters in the Dutch alphabet and 5 of them are vowels. However, there are some rules and differences in the pronunciation of letters. Some letters are pronounced differently, depending on syllables and there can be combinations of letters that you may find strange. Don’t worry, we will simply try to explain the rules with examples in the following lines.

Hollandaca alfabesinde 26 adet harf vardır. Bu harflerden 5 adedi sesli harflerdir. Bazı harflerin telaffuzları hecelerin tipine göre farklılık gösterir. Merak etmeyin basitçe kuralları örneklerle beraber ilerleyen satırlarda açıklayacağız.

A	Kısa a (akşam gibi) ya da uzun aa (tarih gibi) olabilir.	Short like father, long like car.

There are two types of syllables, closed and open. This syllable difference determines how words are pronounced and how they are read. Therefore, it is important to understand the syllable types. As you can see in the table above, there are five vowels in the Dutch alphabet: a, e, i, o, and u. Open syllables end with one of these vowels. e.g. "ra" or "ga". Closed syllables have consonants at the beginning and at the end like "man" or " fel" for example.

Temel olarak kapalı ve açık olmak üzere iki tür hece vardır. Bu hece farkı kelimelerin nasıl telaffuz edildiğini ve nasıl okunacağını belirler. Bu nedenle hece tiplerini anlamak öenemlidir. Yukarıdaki tabloda da görüldüğü gibi Hollnadaca alfabesinde beş adet seli harf vardır: a, e, i, o ve u. Açık heceler bu sesli harflerden biriyle biterler. Örneğin "ra" gibi ya da "ga" gibi. Kapalı hecelerin ise başında ve sonunda sessiz harf bulunur. Örneğin "man" veya "fel" gibi.

Some words consist of only one syllable. e.g. "man". We can usually figure the syllables of other words out by reading the word slowly. For example, the word "tafel" is spelled as ta-fel and it consists of two syllables, an open (ta) and a closed (fel).
Now that we have learned open and closed syllables, we can refer to the following rules.

Bazı kelimeler tek heceden oluşur. Mesela "man" kelimesi. Genellikle diğer kelimelerin hecelerini kelimeyi yavaş okuyarak anlayabiliriz. Örneğin "tafel" kelimesi ta-fel diye hecelenir ve bir açık (ta) bir de kapalı (fel) olmak üzere iki heceden oluşur.
Artık açık ve kapalı heceleri öğrendiğimize göre aşağıdaki kurallara değinebiliriz.

1. If there are two vowels in a closed syllable, it is pronounced long. / Kapalı bir hecede iki sesli harf var ise bu uzun okunur.

2. The vowel in an open syllable is pronounced long. The first syllables below (open syllables) are pronounced long even though they are written with a single vowel. For example, the word "ramen" (windows) is divided into syllables as ra-men, but the first syllable is pronounced as raa-men./ Açık hecedeki sesli harf uzun olarak telaffuz edilir. Aşağıdaki ilk heceler (açık heceler) tek sesli ile yazılmasına rağmen uzun okunur. Örneğin "ramen" pencelere kelimesi ra-men diye hecelerine ayrılır ama okunurken ilk hece raa - men diye uzatılarak okunur.
